The Genetic Research Centre is the only Government Centre providing Genetic counseling and genetic testing services in Mumbai and Maharashtra. The center caters to referrals from major Municipal Corporations and Government medical colleges/hospitals around the vicinity and also from the rural population of Maharashtra and all over India. The department has a well-equipped genetic diagnostic laboratory and a dedicated genetic counseling room, a Medical Geneticist and genetic counselor, a staff nurse, and a social worker to offer genetic counseling services. The Centre has PCPNDT approval for carrying out Genetic counseling and Genetic testing. Around 570 families and parents are counseled yearly for various genetic disorders including infertility, recurrent pregnancy losses, antenatally detected malformed foetuses, Still birth/ Intrauterine Fetal Death (IUFD) foetuses, Short stature, pubertal disorders, primary amenorrhea, Secondary amenorrhea, Y- Microdeletions, Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Hypospadias, Turners syndrome, Ataxia, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), Metabolic diseases, Congenital adrenal hyperplasia(CAH), Congenital hypothyroidism(CH), Cerebal palsy, birth defects, congenital malformations, Austism, Dysmorphic features, Sickle cell disease, Neural tube defect(NTD), Amniguous genitalia, Omphalocoele, Arthogryposis, Di-george syndrome, Wilson Disease, advanced maternal age, prenatal screening, prenatal diagnosis, hereditary cancers, congenital heart disease and various other genetic disorders.
